The term RIDDOR means the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations. RIDDOR applies throughout England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It should be noted that in Northern Ireland, RIDDOR is somewhat different.

Because RIDDOR is a regulation, this means it is required by law. Within this regulation, all deaths, specific kinds of injuries, dangerous occurrences and diseases must be recorded and reported to relevant enforcement agencies.

Throughout England, Scotland and Wales, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Local Authorities (LA) are the relevant enforcement agencies. However, Northern Ireland’s agencies are the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) and Local Authorities.

For something to be RIDDOR reportable, a death or injury must be:

1. Due to an accident that has injured workers, self-employed individuals or non-workers

In line with the HSE, it is explained that an accident under RIDDOR is a ‘separate, identifiable, unintended incident, which causes physical injury’. Specific violent acts against individuals within the workplace are also included in this.

2. Work-related

RIDDOR is applicable to many kinds of workplace and for an injury to be reportable, it must be of a certain type. A work-related accident or incident is one that work has contributed to, as well as any equipment, substances of plant that were present at the time. Workplace conditions can also influence whether an accident is reportable or not.
