Display screen equipment (DSE) is any device of information that displays alphanumerical data of graphics on a screen. Often, these are called visual display units, or a VDU.

The use of DSE falls within the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002. These are the most closely linked regulations in relation to DSE.

Coming into effect on the 1st January 1993, the minimum health and safety requirements for work with DSE became a legal requirement in the UK, implementing a European Directive, No. 90/270/EEC of 29 May 1990.

This means that anybody using DSE daily, for an hour or more at any one time, is classed as a DSE user and must therefore be protected by these regulations.

This course will provide you with ample information on the topic of Display Screen Equipment (DSE), including knowing and understanding DSE set up, legislation, how it relates to The Health and Safety at Work Act, appropriate planning, how to carry out DSE assessments and improving wellbeing relating to DSE risks.
